Effective Organizational Communication

Understanding organizational communication is a key component to being an effective leader. Effective organizational communication allows teachers and staff to feel included and confident. When ensuring that organizational communication occurs within your school, one is able to avoid misconceptions or ideas and eliminate a large amount of confusion regarding school functions. When organizational communication is incorporated by an administrator, they allow their staff to work together to achieve collective goals.

            As a principal I will provide clear, positive communication with a focus on students, teaching and learning. I would achieve this by incorporating several communication tools consistently throughout the school year for a variety of situations. Communicating early and often incorporating online tools (email, Google docs, etc) and face to face discussions will be vital for success. Providing clear and positive communication to the community focusing on students and learning will allow the community to stay current on the events of the school.

To What Extent Should We Use Digital Technology in Education?

Digital technology should be incorporated in schools so we no longer stay status quo. As educators we need to embrace the opportunities available to allow us to incorporate digital technology into our schools. This allows educational leaders to promote success in their schools. In today’s society, students involve technology in a large part of how they function. It is my belief we need to join them in this and provide them with and education that will allow them to “be prepared for the world in which they’re going to live and work and think and play and be” (McLeod).

Educational leaders have the challenging task of envisioning what education will look like for their school as they incorporate the digital age. Scott McLeod states, “We know, simply from projecting current trends forward, that in the future our learning will even more digital, more mobile, and more multimedia than it is now” (2011, p. 4). As educational leaders embrace and incorporate the digital technology into their schools, they will be able to create powerful learning opportunities for their students and staff.

The School Leader as Manager

Effective school leadership consists of two equally significant pieces: leadership and management. To be an effective school leader and manager, there needs to be an awareness of flexibility in the role you play . An effective leader need to be able to look at the current situation and decide if it requires them to step into a leadership role or more of a manager role, and adjust as the situation changes. With that awareness in place, you will be able to create foundation with school management as well and focus on becoming the school leader.


School management consists of the day to day procedures and routines. Implementation, operational issues, transaction, and systems are a few examples of managerial task that occur in a school. If the management pieces aren’t in place the school and staff will not function efficiently when situations arise. School management is the foundation of a school and with that piece in place, administrators will be able to focus on school leadership and the “humanistic side of education, mediated through interpersonal interaction, institutional policies and practices and values such as optimism respect, trust and care” (Stoll, & Fink 1996) .
